Learn what steps you have to take in order to be able to study in the United States.

Here's How:
1. Find, apply and get accepted to an American college that is authorized by the INS to accept foreign students. If you plan to get a degree, make sure the college is accredited by one of the regional accrediting agencies.
2. Make sure you have sufficient financial resources for your studies. The college and the INS require proof of sufficient funds, that is a bank statement or a confirmation of financial support.
3. If you plan to study at a vocational or non-academic school, your school will send you form I-20M-N, Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant (M-1) Student Status For Vocational Students.
4. If you plan to study at a college or academic school, the institution will send you form I-20A-B, Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant (F-1) Student Status for Academic and Language Students.

5. You must apply at a U.S. embassy or consulate in your country. With the application fee of $45.00, you must complete form OF-156. Blank forms are available without charge at all U.S. consular offices.
6. You need a passport valid for travel to the United States; the validity date must be at least six months beyond the applicant's intended period of stay.
7. You need one photograph 1 and 1/2 inches square (37x37mm), full face showing, head must not be covered, against a light background.
8. If you are an "F" applicant, you need form I-20A-B. If you are an "M" applicant, you need form I-20M-N.
9. As mentioned earlier, you must submit evidence of sufficient funds. Determination will be based on tuition and the local economy where you plan to attend school.
10. You will also be asked to demonstrate ties to your home country, so that the US government can be sure you plan to return home after your studies. Proof includes family and other commitments in your country.
11. Submit all these documents to a U.S. embassy or consulate in your country. The approval or denial usually arrives within 3-4 weeks.
Tips:

1. If you plan to get a degree, you probably want to transfer credits obtained in your home country. Have all your credentials (diplomas, certificates, grade reports, curricula, etc.) translated into English by an approved translator.

2. Research and select your school carefully. You don't want to spend all this time and money on a school that is not accredited, has a poor reputation or does not have courses you need and want.

3. If you change schools, or if you switch between academic and non-academic programs, you will need to re-apply for a student visa.
